"Why are fairytales suddenly a "thing"?"
I don't think they are - 'Grimm' sounds a lot more like NBC decided "hey, we'd like a piece of that Supernatural audience" - and as far as I know, it's pulling decent ratings despite mixed reviews.
ABC has Bill Willingham's wonderful comic book 'Fables' in development for a while - basically, imagine every fairytale you've ever heard is real, spread over a thousand magical worlds... which have been over-run by a cruel despot known only as The Adversary. Once upon a time (well sometime in the 17th century) a handful of refugees sought refuge in the only place their enemy wasn't interested in - the only world without magic known as 'The Mundy'. Ours. They hid in a small town on the tip of a wooded island called New Amsterdam, which became New York. And now 'Fabletown' is a neighbourhood that isn't in any guidebook, and The Fables would like to keep it that way. But this fairy tale is not going to have a happy ending.
