The traffic lights were green all the way up 4th Street to Nationwide Boulevard on Tuesday as commuters headed toward the highways for the evening drive home.
But the brake lights were red all the way back past State Street, three-quarters of a mile south.
Downtown interstates have been the bigger focus of traffic advisories and commuter complaints since the Ohio Department of Transportation began its three-year reconstruction of the I-71/670 interchange. But Downtown streets have been jammed, too, as drivers are funneled toward fewer on-ramps at the end of the workday.
Bumper-to-bumper traffic on 3rd and 4th streets, usually experienced only during bad weather or crash-related shutdowns, is a near-daily occurrence now. Broad Street also backs up with drivers who used to be able to jump on highway ramps farther from the Downtown core.
