T shutdown hurts area businesses

As the official holiday shopping period kicks into full gear, shops and other businesses in Somerville and Cambridge have lost a major artery every weekend - the Red Line. Since last month the T has stopped subway service between Harvard Square and Alewife to conduct track maintenance on the weekends. Riders now ride shuttle buses between those stops.

With most sales occurring in the last six weeks of the year, some shop owners near the Red Line’s Alewife, Davis, and Porter Square stations fear that the inconvenience of taking a bus will keep the public away.

“All small retailers are very nervous. We don’t need too many challenges right now,’’ said Seth Lamoreaux of Cambridge Clogs on Massachusetts Avenue.

Even though business has been strong in November at this Porter Square shop, “the next couple of weeks is where the rubber meets the road,’’ he said.

Seeing gross sales decline by $300,000 every year since 2007 and downsizing from 10 employees to four, “we are obviously very nervous. It’s a compressed time,’’ said Lamoreaux.
