Simon captures Sandals Half Marathon

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – National tri-athlete, Andre Simon , captured his second straight half marathon on Sunday when he won the 2011 Sandals Foundation Trans-Antigua Half Marathon.

In a race dominated by tri-athletes, Simon who recently captured the Montserrat Half Marathon defeated other tr-athletes, Rory Butler and Ashville Vigo who placed second and third, respectively.

Candace Chumley captured the female division ahead of Lindsay Duffy .

Simon said he was motivated after he was handed a number usually worn by his recently deceased friend and tri-athlete Jonathan Rhor .

“At the start of the race, Rory came to the starting line and he said, ‘look, here is Jonathan’s number. Run with him today,’ (and) that’s what I did. I ran with Jonathan’s number and I won,” he said.

“Coming out from Montserrat and like I said before, you had plenty hills in Montserrat to come and do a flat course, I just flew. From the time the race started, I went out and I just kept the lead,” the athlete added.
