Warang McManus isn’t a shoe designer, but her kicks are getting people talking. The 15-year-old, a two-time survivor of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, is one of six patients who participated in the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Freestyle program, which teams patients from the Portland, Ore., hospital with Nike designers to create limited-edition styles for Nike.com and Niketown stores. All proceeds go to the hospital, and that’s no small thing: Eight years after its founding, the program has raised more than $3 million for Doernbecher. “It was cool to make a shoe, but also to help the hospital, to which we owe so much,” said McManus. “The staff became my friends when I couldn’t go to school, which was really important.
