Scarlati's photos capture celebrities' essence
Dolly Parton is not rendered as an over-the-top celebrity in Anthony Scarlati's black-and-white photo hanging in the Orgain Gallery at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center.
Gone is Parton's colorful persona, obvious the absence of plastic tones she usually uses to paint her face. Her hair hangs easily in fuss-free layers. She looks like as strange as this sounds to say a real person. With her celebrity essence magically stripped away, she could be a favorite aunt that you love seeing at family gatherings.
Scarlati's other celebrities in this show get similar treatment. That is the essence of "Sacred Access: The Photography of Anthony Scarlati," which runs through Jan. 10, 2012 at the museum at 200 South Second Street.
In an artist's statement, the Chicago native said, "The recording studio is what I consider sacred access, a room filled with pure talent."
Away from fans, management, art directors, Scarlati is allowed to observe the birth of music in its earliest stages.
