• Aiken County landed the biggest corporate capital investment in state history in September when tire maker Bridgestone Americas announced plans to put $1.2 billion into a new plant to make off-road radial tires and an expansion of its existing passenger tire-manufacturing facility. That expansion will bring 850 new jobs to the area and was just one in a string of economic development announcements this year.
• Mast General Store opened on Main Street in May, sparking new life for the retail corridor, which city leaders have been trying to redevelop. Customers lined Main Street to make it the old-time country store and outdoor outfitter’s best grand opening yet. And new stores and restaurants began clamoring for space around the project.
• The Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave final approval to Westinghouse’s AP1000 design just before Christmas, giving new life to a nuclear renaissance in the United States that is expected to start in Georgia, with South Carolina following closely on its heels. It was a victory for S.C. Electric & Gas, which is planning two nuclear reactors at its V.C. Summer plant in Fairfield County – a nearly $10 billion project – with state-owned utility Santee Cooper.
